A Roundtable Discussion on Mobile Financial Services (MFS) was held recently at The Daily Star Centre in the city.
The discussion was moderated by Abdul-Muyeed Chowdhury, former Secretary and former Advisor to the Caretaker Government. Brig. Gen. (Retd.) Shahedul Anam Khan, Editor Defense and Strategic Affairs of The Daily Star delivered the welcome address. The Key Note Speech was presented by Muhammad Abdul Mazid, former Secretary and former Chairman, NBR. Mr. Pial Islam, Managing partner of pi Strategy Consulting, presented the current scenario of mobile financial services around the world.
The Roundtable—which has been designed to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences in the field of Mobile Financial Services (MFS) — was attended by high-level participants from the Government, Bangladesh Bank, Regulators, representatives from mobile operators, financial institutions, ICT experts and Media.
Notable speakers at the Roundtable included Mr. Nazrul Islam Khan, Secretary Ministry of Information & Communication Technology, Dr. AB Mirza Azizul Islam, former Advisor to the Caretaker Government, Mr. Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled, Chairman, Bangladesh Krishi Bank and many other veteran personalities from related fields.
The theme of the Roundtable, organized by The Daily Star, BRAC Bank and bKash, was “Mobile Financial Services: Its Impact and Future in Bangladesh”. The insightful discussions covered core issues for mobile financial services and its stakeholders: current practices, challenges, obstacles and opportunities, financial inclusion of the unbanked, required innovations and changes in the ecosystem, etc. The overall forum provided a common ground to the all participants making it a lively and productive discussion. The Roundtable came to an end with some holistic recommendations which will help to ensure positive growth of the MFS industry and financial inclusion, to ultimately serve the people and development of Bangladesh.
